DIY: Knitting is in fashion! Knitting is right on trend. With the spirit of slow living, the desire for conscious living, the wish for a more relaxed lifestyle and the love of making things yourself, knitting has become popular again. In addition to the desire for sustainability and individual garments, knitting itself is extremely rewarding: the journey is the reward, and the hand-knitted one-of-a-kind piece is the trophy. This makes knitting a creative hobby for self-expression that calms, brings happiness and is also good for your health:
Knitting is healthy Those who knit train their brain: manual coordination and creativity are encouraged, while concentration is strengthened. Studies also show that knitting can have a meditative and blood pressure-lowering effect. Similar to meditation or yoga, it can lead to a complete state of relaxation. Knitting is truly a wonderful craft.
Knitting makes you happy
Anyone who has ever knitted something themselves knows the unbeatable feeling of joy and reward when looking at the finished product. The flow of knitting brings happiness and reduces stress. Stitch by stitch towards happiness – and almost effortlessly towards a self-created unique piece.
Personal knitting art inspires – also as a gift!

KNITTING WITH ALPACA WOOL
Alpaca Wool – Hand-Spun and Plant-Dyed
This very special yarn comes from the Andes, where it was hand-spun and dyed with natural plant colours. The yarn is Fair Trade certified. The colours are radiant and the thread is wonderfully soft and cosy, just as you would expect from the fleece of the gods. Visit us in our farm shop and discover the spinning artistry of the Peruvians from the Andes.
Alpaca Wool and Yarn
We offer our naturally dyed alpaca wool both in skeins and in balls. You can choose between two different yarn thicknesses. The thinner yarn is easy to work with using needle sizes 4–5, while the thicker yarn is suitable for needle sizes 6–8. Choose your favourite colours in our online shop or visit us in our farm shop.
The Right Needle
After extensive research, we discovered the company Selter and its Addi Nature knitting needles. Best quality, sustainability and “Made in Germany”. The philosophy of this family business was very similar to our own values. Our needle test was flawless, and we are delighted to now offer you these naturally beautiful olive wood needles. As circular knitting needles, they combine the positive qualities of high-quality wood with natural aesthetics. They are also suitable for people with nickel allergies. Their tips are extremely stable and feature a beautiful grain. The wood comes from olive trees that no longer bear fruit and would otherwise be burned. Knitting with them is almost silent, and they allow our alpaca wool to glide over the needles almost by itself. Each knitting needle is unique and is additionally finished with natural plant oils. We carry Addi Nature in various lengths and in the right sizes for our alpaca wool.
If you do not want to knit alpaca wool with other needles, you are welcome to take a look at our bamboo circular knitting needles from Addi, which of course also stand for best quality and sustainability. The raw material is sourced from a special region in Japan. Production is carried out with the greatest care in Germany. The needles have a very fine surface and provide a pleasant and easy knitting experience, which is enhanced even further by our alpaca wool. A true experience for the senses!
Of course, we also offer double-pointed knitting needles with very smooth tips and transitions, made from lightweight, high-quality material. With two balls of Abolengo alpaca yarn (supersoft), you can knit your new favourite socks.
Simply let yourself be inspired in our online shop or visit us in our farm shops at Gut Aldenhövel or on Langeoog.
Good to Know
Our alpaca wool can be washed very well in the wool cycle of the washing machine and spun at 600 rpm. For long-lasting enjoyment of your unique piece, it is best to use an organic wool detergent. A thorough hand wash is also sufficient. To do this, add a little wool detergent or baby shampoo to water at around 30°C, let the alpaca garment soak first and then gently move it through the water. Never rub or scrub, as this can cause pilling. Then rinse your garment thoroughly and wrap it in a towel to press out the excess water with a little pressure. Dry your alpaca clothing flat and avoid direct sunlight and tumble drying.
The silky-soft and warm alpaca products are wrinkle-resistant and hardly pill. Alpaca wool is self-cleaning and therefore does not need to be washed constantly. Simply air your favourite piece well, whether it is a duvet or a sweater.
To protect your natural product from moths, we recommend placing a piece of alpaca soap or a small bag of Swiss stone pine shavings in your wardrobe. You should also always store your knitted pieces flat.
Alpaca wool is very fine, soft, fluffy and especially suitable for sensitive skin and people with wool sensitivities. Alpaca fibre is a hollow fibre and is therefore temperature-regulating and quick-drying. In cold temperatures, it stores body heat; in warm temperatures, it has a cooling effect thanks to its ability to conduct heat.
Moisture and perspiration are absorbed by the fibres and released again. Odours can be neutralised thanks to the protein molecules contained in the wool.
Baby Alpaca yarn does not scratch or itch. It is beautifully soft and pleasant on the skin.
The fineness of the yarn is measured in microns. When an individual fibre is finer than 19 microns, it is referred to as Royal Alpaca. Valuable breeding alpacas like our animals retain this fibre fineness well into old age. When spun or woven, these fine yarns look very elegant and almost silky.
Baby Alpaca contains hardly any lanolin.
Alpaca Fibres in Microns
Royal Alpaca up to 19.5 microns
Baby Alpaca up to 22.0 microns
Alpaca Superfine up to 26.5 microns
Alpaca up to 33.0 microns
We have our alpaca wool dyed with plant colours. This process has a very long tradition in Peru.
Up to 160 different colours continue to shine brightly for years thanks to special techniques. Our products are kind to the skin, free from chemicals and help protect the environment. The timeless shades always look fresh and beautiful. Of course, our white alpaca wool can also be dyed yourself. So there are no limits to your imagination.
We support social institutions, smallholders and farmers in Peru. For this reason, some of them may not be certified, as the financial effort required for certifications such as GOTS or Fair Trade is often far too high. We support the people there and travel regularly to Peru to see the situation on site for ourselves. This also leads to new product ideas, designs and friendly contacts. Through our commitment, we can also help small businesses create prospects for the future. Fair trade, appropriate payment and species-appropriate animal husbandry are extremely important to us. That is why we stay in constant contact with everyone involved.
Treat Yourself
You love Abolengo alpaca wool, but cannot or do not want to knit yourself? We are happy to accept custom orders and can, for example, send you a sweater within 2–3 weeks, and hats, gloves or socks after around 8 days.
Coloured alpaca yarn – coloured alpaca wool
We offer many of our alpaca knitting yarns naturally undyed in natural colours. The variety of colours that alpacas give us is enormous. There are 22 official colour shades alone, ranging from white all the way to jet black. The beautiful brown nuances are also created by blending and spinning the fleece of different brown animals. Of course, we also offer hand-spun yarn from our own animals, sorted individually. This allows you to see the animals on the pasture and, after shearing, washing, carding and spinning, purchase knitting yarn from a specific alpaca.
Dyeing with natural colours has a long tradition in Peru. The Incas processed their yarns in more than 160 different colours. Their knowledge of plant dyeing was not only based on the plants used, but also on working with salts. As a result, the colours are still expressive and radiant even after 500 years. Thankfully, this knowledge has been preserved and allows us to offer our products with great added value even today. This gives you skin-friendly yarns without chemical treatments, which can be knitted and worn; the environment is protected, working conditions are much more pleasant, and small Peruvian family businesses are supported through their own income.
It is wonderful to wear a hand-knitted piece with such a beautiful story behind it. Such a piece is sure to bring joy for a very long time. Thanks to the temperature-regulating properties of alpaca wool, alpaca can be worn almost all year round.
