Features of the Ideal Summer Duvet
A summer duvet should be light, breathable, and moisture-regulating. It prevents heat build-up and helps create a pleasant sleeping climate. It should also keep you cool when it’s warm but provide enough warmth for cooler early mornings.
Which Materials Are Suitable for Summer Duvets?
There are many materials that work well for summer duvets. Each one has its own advantages, so your choice depends greatly on personal preference.
Down & Feathers
- Eiderdown: Extremely light and soft, with outstanding insulation properties.
- Goose down: Also light and cozy, good at regulating moisture. Also available from us in combination with alpaca.
- Duck down: A more affordable alternative with similar characteristics.
Pros: Very soft, good moisture regulation
Cons: Strong insulation – might get too warm, often requires sticking out a foot to cool down
Natural Hair & Animal Fibers
- Virgin sheep’s wool: Excellent moisture management and thermal regulation. Basic quality, very affordable.
- Camel hair: Ideal for hot summer nights due to excellent temperature and moisture regulation. Uses both upper and undercoat, so not as regulating as on the animal itself.
- Cashmere: Extremely soft, luxurious, and comfortable on the skin. Uses both upper and undercoat – again, less regulating than on the animal itself.
- Alpaca: Exceptionally temperature-regulating, breathable, and suitable for allergy sufferers, as there are no known direct allergies to alpaca hair. No upper or undercoat – the same regulating ability as the animal itself.
Pros: Natural climate control, long-lasting, highly breathable
Cons: Not machine-washable – but regular airing is enough
Plant Fibers & Vegan Alternatives
- Cotton: A classic that absorbs moisture well and provides freshness.
- Bamboo: Sustainable, breathable, and extremely soft.
Silk: Cooling, luxurious natural fiber with excellent moisture regulation. - Lyocell (TENCEL™): A cellulose fiber with outstanding moisture management.
Pros: Breathable, skin-friendly, easy to care for
Cons: Some fibers insulate less and don’t regulate as effectively as animal hair
High-Tech Fibers
Microfiber: Very lightweight and easy to care for, dries quickly.
Climate fibers (e.g. AIRSOFT®, AIRTEC®): Specifically designed for optimal moisture and temperature regulation.
Pros: Allergy-friendly, easy care
Cons: Synthetic material, poor sleep climate, weak temperature regulation
