Alpacas (Lama pacos) belong to the camel family (Camelidae) and are part of the suborder Tylopoda. Scientific research indicates that they are descended from the vicuña, while llamas are closely related to the guanaco. Their native habitat is in the highlands of Chile, Peru, and Bolivia, where they were domesticated by the Incas over 5,000 years ago. The Incas valued alpacas both as a source of wool and as a source of meat. During the colonial period, their population was drastically reduced by the Spanish conquerors, but the remaining animals survived due to their economic importance for the local farmers. With a shoulder height of 80 to 100 cm and a weight between 50 and 80 kg, alpacas are medium-sized animals with a graceful build. Their bodies feature long, slender legs equipped with soft pads that enable them to navigate uneven terrain with confidence. The long neck and the small, finely shaped head with large, expressive eyes give them a friendly appearance, and their upright, oval ears are another distinctive trait. The dense, soft fleece of alpacas comes in over 22 natural shades and is regarded as one of the most valuable natural fibers worldwide. Additionally, their teeth grow continuously to cope with the wear from sparse forage. Alpacas are gentle, intelligent, and curious animals. As social herd creatures, they exhibit a strong group bond. Their calm demeanor makes them especially popular, even in animal-assisted therapy settings. However, they are capable of defending themselves; when threatened, they band together to protect the herd against predators such as foxes or stray dogs.
Care and Social Behavior
Since alpacas are herd animals, they should never be kept alone. A minimum group of two to three animals is necessary to fulfill their social needs. They can also coexist with other animals like sheep, goats, or horses. However, it is important to provide enough feeding stations and to implement appropriate parasite control measures, as the company of other species does not replace the need for conspecific interaction. As grazing animals, alpacas require ample space. For two alpacas, at least 1,000 square meters are needed, with an additional 100 square meters for each extra animal. On one hectare of pasture, approximately 10 to 15 animals can be maintained. A shelter or barn is essential to protect them from extreme weather conditions. Pregnant or lactating females, as well as animals in poor health, can benefit from supplemental feed. A continuously available lick stone or mineral powder provides essential trace elements, and fresh water must be accessible at all times. Regular health check-ups are crucial. Changes in food intake or behavior within the herd can be early indicators of health issues. The hooves should be trimmed about four to six times a year, depending on the terrain, to prevent malformations.
